Close To Me
Churches are places which have collected and amplified in time an incalculable number of sounds: whether whispered words or mournful songs, cries of desperation or of jubilation, of celebration. The idea of giving existence or matter to memory of a place and at the same time to a personal experience is at the heart of Close to me.

‘In this work I have recorded each of my sisters singing the main refrain separately and arranged the recordings in a round, where one sister’s voice follows the others. Although we live in different places, this work brings us together again...
The work extends these sentiments to anyone who comes into the Chapel.’ (Susan Philipsz)
Close to me is a site-specific installation for the Palatine Chapel, in homage to Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Milan.
Originally a sculptor, the artist here renounces substance. She instead makes use of the language of music, reinterpreting
a hymn which was performed by her and her sisters in Glasgow in 1982, on the occasion of the visit of another Pope: John
Paul II. Moving from the vibration of shapes to that of sounds, Susan provides us with a new relationship between seeing
and hearing, since the listener is induced to modify their normal spatial-temporal perception of a place, developing a
personal awareness of it.
